VHF/UHF Voice
For sending and receiving voice messages over short distances, often using repeaters. This modality uses direct radio to radio communications. VHF = 2 m (144–148 MHz) and 70 cm (420-450 MHz).
HF Voice
For sending and receiving voice messages over long distances. This modality uses direct radio to radio communications. HF = 10 m (28 MHz) to 160 m (1.8 MHz).
Packet
For sending and receiving “Packets” of digitized messages from one station to another, usually over short distances. Packet messages can also be relayed from station to station to accomplish long distance communications. This modality uses a computer, packet modem, and a VHF/UHF radio.
APRS
Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS) is a packet radio system used for tracking objects, people, vehicles, boats, aircraft, manned/unmanned balloons, weather systems, etc. This modality uses a GPS receiver, packet modem, TNC, and a VHF/UHF radio.
PSK31
A digital mode, which uses low power transmission to send and receive messages over long distances. This modality uses a computer and an HF radio.
HF Pactor/Winlink 2000
Sends regular email messages directly from one radio over long distances to another radio that is connected to the Internet. This modality uses a computer, pactor modem, and an HF radio. The modality is technically similar to PSK-31 and uses low power transmission.
Satellite
For sending and receiving voice and packet messages over long distances using Amateur Radio Satellites. This modality primarily uses VHF/UHF radios.
